When the Imperials decided to record their first ever live album in 1970, they decided to go a different route than they had pursued on their last studio album. While "Love Is The Thing" was pure contemporary in its sound and lyrics, the live album contained mostly Southern Gospel songs. Recorded at the Kingsland Theater in my hometown of St. Louis, "Gospel's Alive And Well" proved just that...the Imperials, although starting to move away from Southern Gospel, could still sing it like no other quartet at that time.
After a rousing introduction from none other than Brock Speer, they opened the evening with Stuart Hamblen's quartet classic The First Day In Heaven, and for the rest of the album, The Imperials showed the crowd what a great quartet should sound like, all while singing some of the latest songs from writers such as Dottie Rambo, Bill and Gloria Gaither, and Doris Akers.
They still included some contemporary material in the program. Songs like Come Along With Me, and God Speaking To You showcased the group's new sound, but this album is predominantly Southern Gospel by nature, and it is an outstanding live recording.
One of my favorite songs on the album is their rendition of Dottie Rambo's classic If That Isn't Love. This is some of the finest quartet harmony you will hear anywhere, and it was actually included on the first Dove Award Top 10 LP. Another standout track is Let There Be Peace On Earth, with harmonies that rival the ones found in If That Isn't Love, however, there is not a bad song on this album, and listeners will see that quickly.
The Imperials are in top form on this album...they had just recently started working on a regular basis with Elvis Presley, and things were moving quickly for them, but they proved that could go home one final time, and make it sound as if they had never left.
