Stand By The Power was the Imperials first LP released after the departure of popular lead singer Russ Taff, which obviously means it was the first to feature new lead vocalist Paul Smith. Smith came to the sessions armed with plenty of songs for the group to sing, and with the help of veteran L.A. producer Bill Schnee, they turned out a pretty good, albeit a bit more progressive, album. The sessions were stacked with the best studio musicians Los Angeles had to offer, including several members of the rock band Toto, who all banded together to make some great sounding musical tracks, to which the Imperials added the vocals as only they could sing them.
The two biggest singles on CCM radio were Lord Of The Harvest, and Because Of Who You Are, but there are plenty of great songs on this classic album. Several diverse musical styles are also presented as well, from westcoast pop, to inspirational contemporary, to progressive rock and roll. The Imperials may have been missing Russ Taff, but they have to commended for making a very good album to start the post-Taff era.
This album does not disappoint, it has great musicianship, great vocals, and ten very good songs, and it still sounds good now (what Imperials album doesn't?).
